A recent study has shed light on the connection between caloric restriction and an increased risk of depression, with findings suggesting that men may be more affected than women.

The research team from the University of Toronto analyzed data from 28,528 adults across the United States over a decade, focusing on their dietary habits and mental health outcomes through surveys and clinical assessments.

Participants who adhered to low-calorie diets reported higher levels of depressive symptoms, including fatigue, concentration difficulties, and a diminished interest in activities.

The study’s authors posited that the relationship between calorie reduction and depression might stem from potential “nutritional deficiencies” associated with insufficient protein and vitamins, leading to impaired brain function and lower moods. They also suggested that inadequate weight loss or fluctuations in weight during dieting might exacerbate depressive feelings.

Interestingly, the effects were notably more pronounced in men, possibly due to their increased nutritional demands and a tendency to struggle more with dieting compared to women.

Published in BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health, the researchers concluded that restrictive diets are uniquely associated with significant increases in depressive symptom scores relative to those not engaging in dieting.

Adequate brain health relies on sufficient glucose for energy and omega-3 fatty acids for optimal functioning, and restrictive dieting may impair brain functionality. The researchers observed that both calorie constraints and obesity often lead to nutritional inadequacies and physiological stress, potentially heightening depressive symptoms.

Using the PHQ-9, a standardized clinical survey for measuring depression, nearly 10% of participants reported following a calorie-restricted diet. Those individuals, on average, exhibited scores that were 0.29 points higher on the depression scale compared to non-dieters, with men experiencing more severe symptoms.

The researchers theorized that biological men often have higher caloric requirements, making restrictive diets more challenging and possibly influencing their mood differently than biological women. They noted men’s preferences for richer, often fast-food meals, which might lead to a more pronounced impact on mood when dieting.

While this study is observational and does not establish causation, experts emphasized the need for further research to better understand the connections between dieting and mental health.

Professor Sumantra Ray from the NNEdPro Global Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health commented that the findings contribute to the growing body of evidence linking dietary patterns with mental well-being, raising critical questions about the implications of restrictive diets low in nutrients beneficial for cognitive health — such as omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B12 — on the development of depressive symptoms.

She highlighted that while the effects noted are small, the need for more rigorously designed studies to investigate the relationship between dietary practices and depression remains essential.

This legendary bag, often referred to as one of the most desirable fashion items in the world, was initially given to Birkin as a prototype. In 1994, she sold the “old faithful” to support an Aids charity.

The creation of the Birkin bag was inspired by a chance encounter on a flight in 1984 between Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas, who was then the CEO of Hermès. Following Birkin’s wicker basket spilling its contents, she remarked, “The day Hermès makes one with pockets, I will have that.”

Dumas responded, “But I am Hermès and I will put pockets in for you.”

Sotheby’s will present the original black leather bag during its Fashion Icons auction on July 10. Prior to the auction, it will be showcased at Sotheby’s New York this weekend, following its public display at Sotheby’s Paris last autumn.

The black leather features Birkin’s initials embossed on it and shows remnants of glue from stickers from Unicef and Médecins du Monde. This classic model includes a shoulder strap and measures 35cm in width, 40cm in depth, and 35cm in height, placing it between the standard 35cm and 40cm Birkin sizes.

The bag’s hardware was originally crafted from gilded brass, which was later upgraded to gold plating. Its zippers and bottom studs also distinguish it from newer Birkin models.

Birkin, who passed away at the age of 76 in 2023, was known for her short nails, and the original bag features a nail clipper hanging from a chain inside.

This original bag was among five Birkin bags gifted to the actress and was reportedly her favorite. After it began to show signs of wear, she sold it to an unnamed buyer for charitable purposes.

In a 2011 interview with Vogue, Birkin stated, “One bag is already quite enough. Any bag that’s with me will take the same course as me. It will take the same airplanes, will be squashed in the same way, and will be used as a cushion in airports.” She described the bag as a “rather trivial piece of luggage.”

Research from Queen’s University Belfast indicates that increasing the variety of flavonoids—plant compounds found in foods like tea, berries, grapes, red wine, and dark chocolate—could significantly decrease the risk of serious health issues and potentially extend lifespan. The researchers suggest that following a ‘flavonoid five-a-day’ plan could lead to lower mortality rates.

The findings, published in the journal Nature Food, tracked over 120,000 individuals aged 40 to 70 for more than a decade. Participants with the highest consumption of diverse flavonoids exhibited a notably lower risk for diseases, even when total consumption levels were comparable.

Aedín Cassidy, a professor at Queen’s and co-lead of the study, noted, “Previous research has shown that higher dietary flavonoid intake—bioactive compounds naturally found in various foods and beverages—can help lower the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.”

Different flavonoids offer various benefits. For instance, some may enhance blood pressure, while others aid in cholesterol management and inflammation reduction. Cassidy emphasized the study’s significance, indicating that a varied intake could lead to a greater reduction in health risks compared to relying on a single source.

Benjamin Parmenter, a research fellow and co-lead author, added that daily flavonoid intakes around 500mg corresponded with a 16% less risk of overall mortality, as well as a 10% lower risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and respiratory conditions. This amount roughly aligns with the flavonoid content in two cups of tea.

Importantly, Parmenter pointed out that individuals who incorporated the widest variety of flavonoids experienced even lower disease risk, regardless of total consumption. “Does this imply enjoying chocolate, red wine, berries, tea, and one apple is more beneficial than just berries, two teas, and two apples?”

“Indeed,” replied Dr. Federica Amati, head nutritionist at Zoe. “These findings help illuminate the importance of diversifying bioactive intake. While there are benefits tied to certain bioactives, especially resveratrol in red wine, one must also consider their additional constituents. Alcohol, unfortunately, can outweigh the positive effects of these beneficial compounds.”

She cautioned, “If you choose to have red wine with a meal occasionally, that can be fine, but it shouldn’t be the cornerstone of your dietary improvements.”

When queried about the potential health benefits of chocolate, Amati elaborated, “Flavonoids found in chocolate can support vascular health, but it’s essential to consider the overall composition of the product.”

For heart-healthy choices, Amati specifies, “Opt for dark chocolate rather than milk varieties. Brands lower in flavonoids, like Cadbury’s Dairy Milk, may not yield the same health benefits.”

Studies have demonstrated that dark chocolate, particularly varieties containing 70% cocoa or more, can improve health outcomes, including reduced blood pressure.

Amati also emphasized the significant benefits of traditional five-a-day fruits and vegetables, highlighting their fiber content, which is crucial for enhancing overall health and decreasing mortality risk. Most fruits and vegetables are nutrient-dense but low in calories, containing numerous beneficial compounds beyond traditional nutrition.

To meet the ‘five flavonoids a day,’ Amati encourages consumption of a wide variety of foods, including kale, broccoli, dark berries, sweet potatoes, oranges, and various herbs and spices like cumin and turmeric. “Incorporating these nutrient-rich foods into your diet can be incredibly advantageous,” she advised.

As I type, I notice an alarming amount of stray grey hairs, my roots are still sticky from yesterday’s gel, and I’ve noticed my hairline is thinning a bit on the sides.
